Neck Pain and Head Posture

You are exhausted at the end of the day. You have regular headaches, your neck almost always hurts, and you may suffer from fibromyalgia. Have you considered if your head posture is the cause?

It's All About Head Carriage

If your head is positioned correctly, the opening to your ear should be centered over your shoulder. If your ear opening is located to the front of the shoulder, then your head is off center and you have forward head posture, or forward head carriage. For every inch that your head is off center, there is extra unnecessary weight that is exerted on the muscles in your neck and upper back, making them work even harder to keep your head up.

Unfortunately, most of today’s activities contribute to this condition. Workers are hunched over their computers all day and children spend a lot of time watching television and playing video games. Many of us cradle our phone between our ear and shoulder and driving in the car for long periods of time are all causes for forward head posture. If ignored, forward head posture can lead to disc compression and poor health.

How To Help Yourself

Consider these tips to work towards correct head posture.

  • Be sure to receive regular chiropractic adjustments. Studies have shown that chiropractic care can be effective in reversing forward head posture, reducing pain and preventing further deterioration of the spine.
  • Be aware of your posture and make sure you are sitting up straight with your head in an upright position.
  • Put a limit on time spent playing video games or watching TV.
  • Sleep on a cervical pillow to maintain the proper curve in your cervical spine.
